Here’s A Zinger For Gore

20 03 2007

SENATOR: Two questions. Mr. Gore, isn’t it true that planting trees to reduce the CO2 in our atmosphere just delays the release of that stored carbon until such time the trees burn or die? Isn’t it also true, then, that some of the most popular so-called “carbon offsets” are not really reducing any CO2 from the carbon cycle?

GORE: Uh…Um…Well…I’m glad you asked that…But..Um…I’m really not a scientist…Uh…

SENATOR: I’m sorry Mr. Gore, one more question. Do any of the companies in which you serve an executive role, sell or advocate this kind of “solution?”

GORE: (head explodes)

SENATOR: Remaining torso of Mr. Gore, Why is it that water vapor, the main contributor to greenhouse gas, is continually ignored in climate models, while CO2, which we breathe out and what trees breathe in, is overstated and branded as death?

GORE’S REMAINING TORSO: (splat)

Treehugger.com: Global Warming=Dry Pancakes

20 03 2007

I sure am gonna miss my flapjacks (sigh):

Did you know that this is the time of year when maple trees are tapped to produce maple syrup? Maple trees thrive under certain temperature conditions and produce the sap for maple syrup because of specific temperature cycles. In the early spring, the trees generate sap when the nights are very cold and the days fairly mild. The temperature cycling causes the starch in the sap to turn into sugar and rise in the trunk. It’s one of nature’s delicate miracles – which will disappear if we don’t do something to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are making New England winters milder with each passing year. Join the thousands of people, including Leonardo DiCaprio, James Taylor and Laird Hamilton, who are virtually marching through StopGlobalWarming.org in an effort to bring Americans together to acknowledge that global warming is one of the most important issues today. Their mission is to use the strength of the numbers to urge our government and American businesses to start a new industrial revolution and develop clean energy products. It doesn’t cost a thing to sign up to march. After all, who doesn’t want our environment to thrive and make a better future for our young people? Not to mention dry pancakes.

Quick, go to the store and stock up your maple syrup before it’s TOO LATE!

Science Daily: “Global Temperature Average” Is Meaningless

20 03 2007

From Science Daily via Drudge:

“It is impossible to talk about a single temperature for something as complicated as the climate of Earth”, Bjarne Andresen says, an an expert of thermodynamics. “A temperature can be defined only for a homogeneous system. Furthermore, the climate is not governed by a single temperature. Rather, differences of temperatures drive the processes and create the storms, sea currents, thunder, etc. which make up the climate”.

He explains that while it is possible to treat temperature statistically locally, it is meaningless to talk about a a global temperature for Earth. The Globe consists of a huge number of components which one cannot just add up and average. That would correspond to calculating the average phone number in the phone book. That is meaningless. Or talking about economics, it does make sense to compare the currency exchange rate of two countries, whereas there is no point in talking about an average ‘global exchange rate’.

The road is getting rougher for the Goreacle… many skeptical scientists are squirming out of the woodwork.

Too Hot For Ya’? File A Lawsuit

20 03 2007

A Greenpeace-affiliated organization advocates lawsuits for combating global warming.

Legal Action:

Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have determined that legal action is necessary to persuade the Bush Administration to take meaningful action on climate change. Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and a number of other plaintiffs harmed by climate change (TBD) intend to file a law suit to compel OPIC and Ex-Im to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (“NEPA”). The suit will challenge the agencies? decisions to not prepare an Environmental Assessment under the NEPA.

Outrageous. As a society we are much too litigious.
I’ll let Weird Al take it from here.

Warming Up The Stage

20 03 2007

From Wapo,

Environmentalists, members of Congress and the mayor of an Alaskan village threatened by rising seas will be among the speakers at a rally tomorrow at the U.S. Capitol aimed at reducing the causes of climate change.

Organizers have said that thousands will attend what they call Climate Crisis Action Day, which would make it the largest demonstration held in Washington on the subject of warming global temperatures. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on a stage at the Capitol’s west front.

Climate Crisis Action Day? Sheesh.

Other scheduled speakers include Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and John F. Kerry (D-Mass.), Reps. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), and Mayor Stanley Tocktoo of Shishmaref, Alaska. His island town is one of several villages in Alaska threatened by erosion and rising sea levels, which are products of warming temperatures.

The only crisis I see is that we’ve elected bird-brains as our leaders, and are taking them seriously.

Oh, this explains it.

WASHINGTON (AP) – About one-third of the people living in the national’s capital are functionally illiterate, compared with about one-fifth nationally, according to a report on the District of Columbia. Adults are considered functionally illiterate if they have trouble doing such things as comprehending bus schedules, reading maps and filling out job applications.

But they can probably understand climate science, right?

Tomorrow, the Grand Poobah of snake oil salesmen, Al Gore, will speak to both houses of our Congress.

Will he be fawned over and treated with kid gloves, or will some congressmen grow a pair and ask him tough questions?
