Let The Buyer Beware

13 03 2007

From the Boston globe, click here to see the video of a woman who was duped by unscrupulous “purveyors” of carbon offsets.

I hope Gore didn’t buy any of his offsets from these charlatans. Oh, yeah, he buys them from himself.

Hat tip, Celebrity Carbon Offsets.

Buy Celebrity Carbon Offsets

13 03 2007

These guys have the right idea.

Celebrity Carbon Offsets are designed to be affordable… just $5.00 per package. You simply purchase a package of C2O, select the celebrity of your choice and then mail your carbon offset seeds to the rich and famous along with a certificate showing how you’ve done your part and now it’s their turn to plant the seeds in their yard. It’ll work out great, since they’ve got hired help to do the lawn. And they’ll save even more in lawn care costs, over the long term, since Switch Grass only need to be harvested 4 times a year. What could be better?

We know that celebrities will want to do what they can… plant the Switch Grass and help the earth. And what’s going to be great, is when gardeners of the wealthy do their part and use scythes to cut the prairie grass instead of using gas carbon-emitting lawn mowers.

Please, do your part to help reduce the carbon footprint of all of those jet-set celebrities whose motto is “Do as I say, not as I do.”

The full blog for Celebrity Carbon Offsets is here.  Well worth a visit.

The Soothing Sounds Of Global Warming

13 03 2007

It’s gonna be the hottest event of the year.  Via Drudge, The Politico has the scoop.

Yes, the former vice president wants to stage a global-warming concert at the Capitol. I can’t believe it’ll come off, but if it does, I want a ticket. Look at some of the bands they have lined up for this thing (at liveearth.org), including the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg and Bon Jovi. Even I know these guys are pretty cool. Get it? Pretty cool.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) have introduced a resolution to use the Capitol grounds as a site for the huge, multi-venue global-warming concert on July 7.

The Live Earth concert will take place on seven continents and reach more than 2 billion people, according to its promoters. One of the groups involved is the Alliance for Climate Protection, founded by, among others, … wait for it … Al Gore.

Wow, not only can you buy your carbon offsets from Gore, now you can buy your concert tickets from him, too.  For all his faults, you have to give him credit for intrepid entrepreneurship.

It’s all about the Benjamins.

The New York Times Is Getting Warmer

13 03 2007

The Hollywood left LOVES the Goracle and his alarmist hackumentary, An Inconvenient Truth. Shockingly, the NYT highlights scientific criticism of the movie.

But part of his scientific audience is uneasy. In talks, articles and blog entries that have appeared since his film and accompanying book came out last year, these scientists argue that some of Mr. Gore’s central points are exaggerated and erroneous. They are alarmed, some say, at what they call his alarmism.

“I don’t want to pick on Al Gore,” Don J. Easterbrook, an emeritus professor of geology at Western Washington University, told hundreds of experts at the annual meeting of the Geological Society of America. “But there are a lot of inaccuracies in the statements we are seeing, and we have to temper that with real data.”

How inconvenient for Mr. Gore. They even expose one of his scare tactics.

It estimated that the world’s seas in this century would rise a maximum of 23 inches — down from earlier estimates. Mr. Gore, citing no particular time frame, envisions rises of up to 20 feet and depicts parts of New York, Florida and other heavily populated areas as sinking beneath the waves, implying, at least visually, that inundation is imminent.

I have an inflation-adjusted bet with a buddy of mine that we will not see any substantial rise in sea level within 2o years.

I’ve already spent it. Anyway, on with the show.

“Hardly a week goes by,” Dr. Peiser said, “without a new research paper that questions part or even some basics of climate change theory,” including some reports that offer alternatives to human activity for global warming.

Geologists have documented age upon age of climate swings, and some charge Mr. Gore with ignoring such rhythms.

“Nowhere does Mr. Gore tell his audience that all of the phenomena that he describes fall within the natural range of environmental change on our planet,” Robert M. Carter, a marine geologist at James Cook University in Australia, said in a September blog. “Nor does he present any evidence that climate during the 20th century departed discernibly from its historical pattern of constant change.”

Ouch. I can almost see cognitive-dissonance on the faces of the Gorons who blindly follow their pied piper.

One more money shot.

“For 12 years, my colleagues and I have protested against the unsubstantiated claims,” Dr. Reiter wrote in The International Herald Tribune. “We have done the studies and challenged the alarmists, but they continue to ignore the facts.”

Of course, the entire article is peppered with love for Gore, and is overall slanted toward his movie, but cracks in the facade are becoming visible.

Which Is It?

13 03 2007

“During the last year, global warming has been predicted to lead to wetter winters, drier winters, another ice age, blazing-hot Mediterranean summers killing thousands, greater biodiversity and less biodiversity.”

                            — Dr. Philip Stott, Emeritus Professor of Biogeography at the University of London

Which is it?  The irony gets even thicker when you throw in a quote from one of the geniuses that, due to extreme cold weather, had to cancel an expedition to study global warming.

The explorers had planned to call in regular updates to school groups by satellite phone, and had planned online posts with photographic evidence of global warming. In contrast to Bancroft’s 1986 trek across the Arctic with fellow Minnesota explorer Will Steger, this time she and Arnesen were prepared to don body suits and swim through areas where polar ice has melted.

Atwood said there was some irony that a trip to call attention to global warming was scuttled in part by extreme cold temperatures.

“They were experiencing temperatures that weren’t expected with global warming,” Atwood said. “But one of the things we see with global warming is unpredictability.”

Oh, I get it…  instead of coming to the reasonable conclusion that climate change is unpredictable, unpredictability is now a symptom of global warming.

We must all do our part to stop Global Unpredictableness!

Sheesh.
